“My
Addiction: My Gift; My Curse,” is a South African contemporary fiction novel
that reflects on the relatable day to day livelihood of an Afrikaans vampire
nurse that works in an old age home.
Her
daily struggle is intriguingly combined with dark, thriller fiction that is
laced with fast bikes, complex characters and wacky humour.
In
this, the first novel of a trilogy, readers are taken through a journey of
reflection and acceptance which spans over two timelines. The idea is to tie in
a future timeline, which reflects the struggle of rehabilitation with a past
setting that exposes readers to the main characters history.
The novel is set predominantly in Africa yet has universal appeal as the
plot takes on richly rendered excursions between to the Old World and other
parts of the New. Readers will find it to be an interesting bilingual
read—since it reflects on different languages-- which is a feature that adds to
rather than detracts from the overall theme.
My Addiction; My Gift – My Curse allows the reader to escape into a
completely new world.
It touches on familiar experiences within any woman’s life and unravels
in a fictional setting that ties in with actual occurrences and historical
figures.
